DESCRIPTION

Designed to meet the needs of the Algerian war, the light Panhard machine is an original material of which several thousand copies have been sold around the world. From 1962 to 1963, it was supported by airborne, mountain and naval infantry units.

For this it has been studied and realized Légère (- of 5 t). The term 60 corresponds to its armament: a mortar barrel of 60 mm. It is available in two versions 60-7 with two machine guns of 7.5 and 60-12 with a 12.7. It was replaced by the ELC Sagaie light combat equipment, also manufactured by Panhard.

HISTORY BACKGROUND

aml60_036.jpg.0f69ca86bd2ff0f586cf0e1526

During the 1950s, the French army used Daimler Ferret in large numbers. She decides to adopt a machine gun of national design and Panhard presents a prototype in 1957, armed with a very rudimentary mortar. The company won the AMX light crawler engine project and the Berliet project.

The production of the AML series (called AML 245 by this company) began in 1960. Panhard had already delivered to the army the AMD 165/175 in 1938/1940 and the AMD 178 in 1945/49. Since its adoption, more than 4,000 vehicles have been delivered and the manufacture has been exported for a long time. In the French production, of which more than 900 copies are intended for the French army and the armored mobile gendarmerie group, are added 1,600 AML 60/90 manufactured under license by South Africa under the name Eland Mk7 / Eland 60 / 90.

As of January 1, 1989, in addition to the vehicles of the overseas units, 439 AML 60 and 188 AML 90, or 735 vehicles, are on the French metropolitan territory. All AML 60 and 188 AML 90 for Reservist units of the operational defense of the territory, 72 AML 90 for the Rapid Action Force and 36 others in the 1st Army.

They will be withdrawn from service in the 90s. The M3 Panhard transport vehicle is a variant of the AML-60 and uses most of its components. Designed in 1969, it was manufactured in 1200 copies from 1971 to 1986 and sold exclusively for export.

In 1950, the heavy and complex Panhard EBR entered service. However, the staff needed a lighter and faster reconnaissance vehicle to patrol the colonial areas and many other tasks open to cheaper vehicles.

As an alternative, the government bought the British Daimler ferrets, widely used in the counterinsurgency of the Algerian war, while the heavier EBRs and the wartime M8 Greyhounds were no less mobile. . The state of this theater of operations, consisting of rapid skirmishes in mountainous terrain, imposed a vehicle capable of firing indirectly with a mortar and a vehicle easier to use and maintain (the "contingent" raised that was sent was made of raw recruits).

Thus, in 1956, the French Government published a specification for a vehicle of dimensions and layout similar to that of Ferret, on which was mounted a mortar loading by the breech. Panhard responded quickly to the call with the Model 245 Auto Mitrailleuse Légère Gun or A.M.L. in 1959, which was tested at the same time as the Saviem and DEFA-AMX models, but accepted for service.

+1 It does have a heat shell and it's one of the most used french armored car.

(Btw maybe we could get other variants with a 60mm gun later?)

If we get it as a premium tech tree AC then gaijin will disappoint me a lot.

Gib pls :)

There are a few more Panhard AML that they could add.

And should be easy. Since we have the AML-90.

Like:

French AML-60-20 with CNMP turret. Was for Export. So could work as GE vehicle.

Irish AML-20 could be a nice GE prem for UK/Commonwealth tree.

Prob 1 or 2 more that could be added :)

This should be a premium while the 60-20 Serval should go in the main TT.

pictured : AML Serval (60mm in turret, 20mm on top, 7.62 commander,  has APFSDS)

That's for the 60mm Long Range, the one on the AML 60-20 Serval turret. the pictured AML 60 has the 60A1, HEAT only. (1year, it's almost necro at this point)

Don't worry, if it makes sense, Gaijin will do exactly the opposite. And they will do it in 5 years.

25mm At 45 mean how much in flat surface?

i checked the 20mm coaxial. it seem to be a M621 who was an autocannon based on the MG 151. but fear not because they had made his penetration much better than the MG151/20. it have a velocity of 1030 m/sec with AP rounds who weight 0.101 kg. according to Gaijin penetrator it shall get to around 40mm at 100m wich is not bad for a Coax. its enough to be a treat to any light tank and even some medium tank. if the APFSDS or the HEAT of the 60mm can penetrate more than 70mm (on flat hit), i would certainly think it have his place. if it have better penetration then it would have even better reason to be ingame.

according to some calculation. 25mm of penetration at 45 degree should give around 42mm at 90degree. it sound a bit low to me.

anyone can calculate the penetration from this angled result?

from Warthunder calculation. a round of 1.550 kg flying at 800 m/sec should give about 61mm of penetration at 1000m. but this is a APFSDS round wich mean the penetration is likely to be much higher as its a sub calibraded round, likely around 150mm. unless the round is not that heavy.

It is not that heavy

It is a 0.45kg, 220mm long, im not sure if it is a steel core or a tungsten core

And we get stats for the HEAT 60mm OCCHB round (compatible with both HB 60 from the suggestion and 60LP of the Serval)

I remember reading the autocanon being a M693/20F2 but i need to find the source again

Edit : Jane's is not the best source but it will suffice

"Hispano-Suiza Serval 60/20"

M621 is usually for when there is more than one 20mm and you need less recoil (e.g : Kriss twin 20mm,) but not always (e.g 53T4), and very very light turrets or for air vehicles ( M621 pod) due to being half the weight of M693.
