This is the production model of the Type 98 Ke-Ni, as distinguished by the larger turret and more angular hull. The turret of the prototypes was found to be too small and uncomfortable for tank crews, which led to the larger cylindrical turret being developed. This turret was also used for the Type 2 Ke-To and Type 2 Ka-Mi tanks. The one in game is the model "A" prototype.

Hello, I would like to clarify some things - the Ke-Ni that is shown here is actually the production model Ke-Ni. The tank that we have in game is actually the prototype. We can tell from a few features between the tanks:

  • The in-game Ke-Ni has the following:
    • 12mm of armor at the most
    • Conical turret
    • Rounded hull

It is based primarily off of this picture of the prototype: Type_98A_Ke-Ni.jpg

Type98KeNi_Garage.jpg

The production model Ke-Ni differed in the following ways:

  • 16mm of armor at most
  • Larger cylindrical turret
  • More angled hull

This is further supported by the Ke-Ni's operator manual, found on this website: http://www.horae.dti.ne.jp/~fuwe1a/newpage51.html

Those specifications took way too long to translate, but hopefully that's helpful.

Anyways, since this is the production model and not the prototype, the description and title should probably be changed a little bit. Probably something along the lines of:

"This is the production model of the Type 98 Ke-Ni, as distinguished by the larger turret and more angular hull. Yes, that's right. So technically there are a total of 3 Ke-Ni light tanks - the Prototype A (what we have in War Thunder already), the Prototype B (which had Christie suspension, there's a suggestion for it here) and the Production model Ke-Ni, which is the one I described in my post and you have pictures of in the OP. Hope this clears things up for you!

Ofc i want this darn thing! The ke-ni with hexagonal  hull was the one i expected to see in war thunder not the one with rounded hull.

The So-Ki in the game has Ke-Ni production chassis.

The one in this image is ke-to btw but they all  shared the same chassis.

Why don’t we replace the in tree version with the production model, and make the prototype a potential premium?

No need, We should have ke-ni proto and production in tech tree while protype B with christie suspension is premium, sounds better this way to me.

Ah so the Ke-Ni we have is a prototype. But what are the differences Ke-Ni and Ke-To then?

Also +1.

The only difference between the production model Ke-Ni and the Ke-To is that the Ke-Ni uses the Type 100 37mm and that the Ke-To uses the Type 1 37mm. I have heard that the Ke-To might have gotten wider tracks, though I'm not 100% sure on that one. In any case, it's a pretty small difference either way.

Honestly, i'd rather they straight up change the model of the Ke-Ni to the production vehicle.

Why not have all of the possible Japanese tanks to fill up the tree that helps if you need a line up.

If so, I think the prototype should be in an expandable folder after the used one or something.  Players should not have to be forced to grind though proto tanks if real tanks are available in it’s place.

I agree with putting the current Ke-Ni in with its production model instead of just replacing it. While the current version is just a prototype, it's distinct enough from the production model that I'd rather not get rid of it. Not to mention, I doubt Gaijin would want to discard the work they put into making the model. Or, now that I think about it, the work that some other company put into it that Gaijin paid for.

I reposted the tank images onto Imgur in case they weren't appearing for anyone else. @onemax9000, do you think you could replace the image links with these?:

Spoiler

gL1lqVV.jpg Nwmkqmj.jpg 3Rhs146.jpg qLZGYZC.jpg iltWRgu.jpg dJXuPsf.jpg

These two pictures are supposedly of the Type 2 Ke-To, not the Type 98 Ke-Ni, but it's unclear what the difference actually is between the two tanks anyways besides maybe the gun (Ke-Ni uses the 37mm Type 100 while Ke-To uses the 37mm Type 1):

Spoiler

1vrZorL.jpg 1L15iKo.jpg

Also here's a technical drawing that gives a better idea of how the tank's hull is shaped. I'm not sure it's completely accurate though, given how the hull edges seem to jut out more compared to the photos:

vDjvn9X.jpg

For reference, all images (besides the Ke-To ones) come from this website: http://www.horae.dti.ne.jp/~fuwe1a/newpage51.html.

The website also mentions that the elevation angle was +15 and depression was -25, very different from the Ka-Mi despite both tanks using similar turrets. This might be due to the different gun breech affecting the angles, since the Ke-Ni uses the Type 100 while the Ka-Mi uses the larger Type 1.

It looks like it juts out because neither the tracks/suspension or the mudguards are included in the technical drawing.
