This machine was constructed in 1977 year. As a base used by military machine Corps "Marder". Main purpose — intelligence and fire support for the troops in case of confrontation with the Russian armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles. So as not to lure in this "work" expensive and massive "Leopards" (the number that they will be used to perform a more fundamental problems), German designers virtually all the troops disembarked, leaving only a group of 3 Scouts and native turret with 20 — millimeter automatic cannon changed a good low-profile turret armed 57-mm machine gun company "Bofors". In the machine was used cartridge 57x438R, which shoots armor-piercing shells at a rate of up to 1020 m / s.

Quick-fire gun high power would allow to shoot any Russian light armored vehicles with different ranges, and for confrontation with the tanks, the designers were capacity for anti-tank guided missiles HOT or TOW/TOW-2, while its reloading performed automatically, without leaving the crew out.

Meals gun was resolved very curious in the feeder tray had four shots, all of which served to accommodate 3 pyatipatronnyh clips of ammunition of various types. With all this choice of the trays at the touch of a button. So Makar, the designers have realized the possibility of instant configuration of the type of shells in the gun (assuming complete consumption of the previous holder).

Obviously, a similar ingenious system of supply of manpower and claimed if the scouts are not doing their direct obligations, they would have had to juggle cages because the ammunition was very impressive: 148 57-millimeter rounds, and 6 missiles in transport-launch container.

The main armament was designed to be used as a clip-feeder. In the feeder, the tray had four shots, each of which served to accommodate shells of various types. The firing mechanism was used by button selection, allowing instant reloading when pressed.

A prototype was built and introduced to the Bundeswehr officials on 30th of November 1977. It was constructed on the hull of a prototype Marder (the same hull that was used to actually build the TAM prototype, it was somewhat modified compared to the mass-produced Marder version) – the hull itself had following dimensions:

  • Hull length: 6410 mm
  • Hull width: 3306 mm
  • Hull height: 1848 mm

The Marder prototype chassis had only quite light frontal armor capable of stopping only Soviet autocannon shells (up to 30mm) and heavy machinegun rounds (14.5mm AP rounds):

  • Upper frontal plate – 11mm at 12 degrees (53mm LOS)
  • Lower frontal plate – 32mm at 66 degrees (35mm LOS)
  • Sides – 15mm (at 90 or 60 degrees)
  • Rear – 11mm at 60 degrees (13mm LOS)
  • Roof – 11mm

The vehicle weighed 28.5 tons and was powered by a MTU 833 Ea-500 600hp engine paired with a HSWL-194 gearbox, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 21 hp/t and allowing it to go as fast as 70 km/h (both forwards and backwards). The vehicle had operational range of 600 km.

The most interesting part of the vehicle, however, was its weaponry. The vehicle was armed with a 57mm Bofors L/70 Mk.1 automatic cannon, originally designed for ships with automatic feed, that could fire 200 57x438R HE rounds per minute at 1020 m/s. Other types of ammunition included AP rounds, semi-AP rounds (950 m/s) and the advanced 3P rounds (1035 m/s, programmable, pre-fragmented, proximity-fuzed). With the modern fire control system and the gun mount depression/elevation (-8/+45), the gun could engage ground targets as well as helicopters thanks to its integrated helicopter sensor. In order to knock out enemy armor, the vehicle was also armed with a TOW missile launcher. Ammunition capacity consisted of 48 rounds in the two feeders (in total the vehicle carried around 100 rounds) and 6 anti-tank guided missiles. The gunner could select between the two feeders (each had 24 rounds).

Sounds great, what missiles did it use? What was the performance of the armour-piercing?

Oh, and the poll asking if it is in the timeframe is moot.

The timeframe is 193X-1979 for tanks. If you wanted to ask if people thought it would be balanced, that would be different, but that's more or less your first question.

which question? do you think is most appropriate for this vehiclecan I fix

Basically this is a German ZSU-57-2 with only one 57mm and ATGMs.

Yes but its gun was designed to destroy tanks. Much more efficient.

It wasn't really. The gun in question is the Bofors 57mm:

As you can see, it's a naval AA gun. Once again it's an AA gun that just so happens to be good against tanks.

Work on these weapons began in 1962 based largely upon experience gained with the Bofors 57 mm/60. Compared with that weapon, the major improvements of the Mark 1 were a higher rate of fire, the use of new munitions including an improved proximity fuse, water cooling for the gun tubes and a new electro-hydraulic system for rapid training and elevation.

Thanks.
It's really common to use AA guns as anti-tank guns !

High explosive shells with adjustable fuse are really efficient to fire under a cover !

3P ammunition would probably be as effective as the S-60's APCBC.

All of my yes, mainly because it looks like some sort of super-advanced panther. Plus, 50mm autocannon and TOW atgm's? So long as it's SACLOS, or i probably won' bother with even using the missiles unless the enemy needs to be instaderped three meters away.

Would also finally give us a pretty decent looking light tank, Germany's infamous here on the forums for having absolutely no lights past tier 2. We ought to find some more.
